The Different Types of Microwaves

Microwaves have come a long way in the last several years; there is no doubt about that. What used to be clunky, loud, unattractive appliances are not sleek looking kitchen appliances that work well and look even better! There are two basic types of microwaves available now, so that consumers can choose what sort of microwave will best suite their lifestyle as well as the space they have available for kitchen appliances. Every kitchen is different, and manufacturers can provide something for every consumer.

Countertop Microwaves

Countertop microwaves are the most popular type of microwave on the market today. This is the most well known type of microwave, probably because it was the first type available to the average consumer. Countertop models are also highly attractive because you literally have to plug them in and then you can start cooking. Today’s counter top microwaves usually have the user interface on the door so that the appliance doesn’t have to be very big to be quite functional. Countertop models are usually quite affordable, even when they have all of the bells and whistles you need to get your cooking done. Countertop microwaves are generally used by people that do not own their homes or move frequently, so that they can move their microwave with them!

Over Range Microwaves

Over range microwaves are those that require professional installation. These microwaves usually are more powerful than their countertop counterparts, and often have more of the features that those that cook with them are looking for. Over range microwaves often have fans built in, and a large user interface so that the microwave can be easily controlled depending on what is cooking. The over range varieties usually have fans built right in, as well as great features like lights to shine down on the cook top, clocks and more. While the countertop variety is more popular than the over range microwave, the over range varieties are great for people with small kitchens or those who are looking to maximize their kitchen space.

Other Considerations

Not only should you consider where your microwave will reside in your kitchen, you should also consider how large you want your microwave to be. You may be surprised to know that most microwaves come in a variety of sizes and are known as compact, mid size, family, and full size. Normally you’ll find all of these sizes in the countertop models, but there may be only a couple size offerings in some of the over range models. The size you choose should depend on how big your family is, how much space you have available in your kitchen, and what you cook in your microwave. Obviously if you only pop popcorn every once in awhile you can go with a smaller microwave than if you cook whole meals in your microwave several times a week. Most families find that the family or full size microwave is ideal while single people or those living in apartments will find the compact or mid sized microwaves more than adequate.

Choosing the right type of microwave for your home probably won’t be all that hard when you look at the space in your home and you think about what you will use it for. Before you go to the store to purchase a new microwave you’ll want to measure the area where you will put your microwave, whether it will be mounted over the range or on the countertop. If you have had a counter top microwave for some time and you’d like to save some space in your kitchen, at least consider an over range model, as they really do free up a lot of the space on your counter! If you are comfortable with a counter top and you don’t mind the space that it takes up, then stick with that. Microwaves are all about personal preference and the layout of your kitchen, so stick with what works, or try something new if it hasn’t been working.
